The Devas (gods) and Asuras (demons) were churning the ocean to obtain Amrutha, the nectar of immortality. During the churning process, a deadly poison named Alahala was produced which threatened to destroy all creation. In this moment of crisis, Shiva came forward and swallowed the poison, saving the universe from destruction. However, he didn’t let the poison harm him either; instead, he held it in his throat, earning him the name Neelkanth (the blue-throated one). This act of Shiva demonstrates his selfless benevolence and supreme consciousness, showing his willingness to endure suffering for the welfare of all beings. This story also symbolizes the process of spiritual growth, where one first has to face negativity and overcome challenges (poison) to attain enlightenment (Amrutha).
