A beautiful story that illustrates his greatness and his blessings for his devotees is the tale of his devotee, Markandeya. Markandeya was a young boy who was destined to die at the age of sixteen. However, he was a staunch devotee of Shiva and spent his days worshiping the Shiva Linga. On the day destined for his death, the Lord of Death, Yama, came to claim his life but found the boy deep in prayer. When Yama tried to take away Markandeya’s life, he hugged the Shiva Linga tightly. To protect his devotee, Shiva appeared from the Linga and saved Markandeya from death, granting him eternal life. This story symbolizes not only Shiva’s role as Mahadeva, the great protector and benefactor but also the blessings he bestows on his devotees who are steadfast in their devotion
